Rochester, Chatham, and ?

Is it Gillingham or Jillingham? I’d say the second. But station announcers at Charing Cross seem to want to sit on the fence. I just heard a recorded announcement that used both in the same sentence. I guess its mashed up from separate snippets but it did sound like one voice.

  1. I’ve always thought that it is “Jillingham”, Kent and “Gillingham”, Dorset.

  2. Kerensa is right – however anyone on ticketing/manual correction announcements who works at Waterloo is used to saying the Dorset one and if they move (not so far up the road) they forget to “Jill..” it.
